'Invisible shopping' in a smarter food world: Utopia or Dystopia?

The City Food Lecture 2016 presented a gadget-laden vision of the food of the future, with smart fridges, intelligent mugs and websites that do the shopping

Technology will be intrinsically linked to food in the future, with consumers tracking everything they eat and drink via calorie-counting products, wearable apps, smart fridges and a range of devices such as Vessyl, an intelligent cup that monitors everything you drink.

This was the vista described by Christophe Jouan, chief executive of the business consultancy The Future Foundation, at the the 2016 City Food lecture at London's Guildhall.

More than 600 bigwigs from the food and drink industry heard Jouan address the question 'What, When and How will we be eating in 2025?' According to Jouan, consumers will look for as much information and control as possible, via information technology, and he advised food producers to partner with tech start-ups to ensure their products had an existence in the digital world. Trips to the shops will be replaced by 'invisible shopping',  with devices or websites set up to automatically reorder food and drink without intervention by the customer, even predicting what the user wants.
