Finland eager to eat cricket-based protein bars

The manufacturers behind a new line of insect based protein snacks have been taken “by surprise” by the demand for their product in Finland.

A new range of Zircca protein bars are produced by Leader Foods and are available in two flavours: nutmeg & cocoa and strawberry & yoghurt. Each bar contains around 17 crickets and they will retail for around £1.50 a bar.

According to Food Navigator the first batch of 500,000 bars was sold within the space of “a 15 minute phone call.”

The consumption of insects is often suggested as a solution to providing a sustainable source of protein.

Climate Change and Nature: Sustain has taken a keen interest in the rapidly accumulating evidence about the effect of food and farming on climate change and nature, as scientific evidence emerges that our food system is a very significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss.
