Allotment surplus adding value to online shopping platform

Neighboorfood Nottingham is Nottingham’s dedicated online local food platform with over 470 product lines. The aim is to connect local producers to local people, making shopping for local food both quick and easy. The group has recently added surplus from local allotment and community food growers to complement the online shopping experience.

Neighboorfood Nottingham is a click and collect service. People order and pay online then collect from Primary Studios on Thursday between 6-7:30pm. The beauty of shopping in this way is that there is no waste, as products are prepared or harvested to order. Freshness is another key selling factor, people love that what they are getting has not been sat on supermarket aisles but harvested and or baked on the day of collection.

From a fresh fruit and veg perspective, the group have recently introduced the concept of a ‘surplus growers table’ to complement the online shopping experience. When people come to collect their order they can also pick up and pay with cash vegetables, salad, soft fruit and flowers, grown using organic principles, harvested on the day and grown within three miles. You don’t get much more local for that.

Nottingham Good Food Partnership, Veg Cities Nottingham coordinators, are helping to promote this scheme in events and festivals they are organising in the city such as the Neighbourhood Food Growing Festival and the second Veg Power festival taking place in August after the success of the first Veg Power festival in 2018.

Sustain are encouraging more areas to launch Veg Cities campaigns, and get local businesses and organisations making veg pledges. Veg Cities is currently the feature campaign of Sustainable Food Cities, and is run in partnership with Peas Please.
