Getting started

Create an account using your name, email address and a password. Note that currently the platform is aimed at upper tier local authorities in England or Northern Ireland.

If you already have a Sustain account or have used the platform before - login.

Generate your survey

Click ‘Generate new survey’. Choose the local authority or council you represent from our map. You can also add survey access for colleagues here.

Consent to our use of your data by clicking ‘Agree and continue’.

Your survey homepage

Familiarise yourself with the survey headings - they tally with the Sustainable Food Places themes which look at how places work across the food system and with different partners. This survey asks about your council’s activity but also your contribution and involvement as a partner with wider place–based food work.

To access your survey, click the 'Open survey' button.

You may find it easier to download a Word version of the survey to complete off-line with colleagues and then return to cut and paste in the answers. To do so look out for the ‘Export as Word document’ button.

Your survey users

You and two other colleagues can have access to the survey via independent logins. To add a colleague, look for the blue people-with-cog icon on your platform homepage.

Fill in your survey

Each question has 5 options to choose from – read through and self assess your councils work, placing yourself at the level that reflects your work – this could be no action or commitment, up to an exceptional approach. Some questions won’t be relevant so you have the option to skip up to three questions.

Please give evidence for your answer – by telling us more about the work and sharing web links where we can learn more (links need to be given in full, or if very long, consider using a link shortener such as bit.ly)

We know that food work crosses not only many different departments but also voluntary community & business partners and that you will need to consult with colleagues to help answer the questions - so you can give up to two fellow colleagues access to your survey. They will have the ability to add and edit responses and submit the completed survey.

Email individual questions

Still need help from someone in your team? You can email text from individual questions and the ‘Help answering this question’ to yourself by clicking on the envelope icon next to each question – this can then be forwarded to a colleague or partner, who can email you with the answer you need

Remember that if you prefer, you can fill the survey in off-line by downloading a word version to collate answers, then cut and paste them into the platform. Look for the ‘Export as Word document’ button on your platform home screen.

Highlight and celebrate work from your local area

At the end of the survey, you’ll have the opportunity to highlight particular areas of food work you are proud of which may be featured in a case study (with your permission), plus you’ll have the option to give us some feedback on how you found the platform to help us improve.

Submit your survey

When you are happy, you can submit your survey and download a full PDF version.

It’s your choice to then publish your results to showcase the great work you’re doing, and demonstrate where you are in your journey – your full answers will be visible to those who visit the website.
