Workshop discussion and chat transcript
The nine Bridging the Gap pilot projects developed innovative models of increasing equitable access to organic fruit, veg and pulses access through community retail and school food procurement. However, we know that tensions and misconceptions exist, whether among local authority and community actors, members of the public, or among producers and suppliers. This workshop is an opportunity to explore these in detail and identify resource needs to overcome barriers to integrate organic into local food system ambitions and objectives.
The workshop featured an inspiring talk from Nathan Richards, farmer at Troed y Rhiw, a 23 acre mixed organic farm situated in Ceredigion, on the value of organic and working with local food networks in Wales.
The workshop captured:
- A better collective understanding of where organic and supply chain and access work fits within wider food partnership objectives
- Common challenges and barriers across local areas, including misconceptions about organic
- How Bridging the Gap can best support local activity, both around project development and influencing local authorities
