Sustain Better Food Britain

We want everyone to be able to enjoy food that is good for our health, produced in a way that supports good livelihoods, reduced waste and greenhouse gas emissions, whilst promoting high animal welfare and restoration of nature.

We are living through critical years for the future of people and the planet. Our climate, bees, soil, water and ocean ecosystems – indeed all of the natural systems that provide our food – are under severe pressure, and much farmland and marine wildlife is in serious trouble. Precious natural resources and ecosystems are being destroyed, whilst perversely a third of the food we produce is simply thrown away. Animal farming is contributing significantly to climate change and deforestation, as well as to foodborne disease and the creation of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

The farmers and fishers who provide our food and who could help fix these problems are also finding it increasingly hard to earn a decent living. Meanwhile, an estimated 8.4 million people in the UK struggle to get enough to eat.

We must fix this. We can. Good food standards must be built into farming and fisheries policies; into public health, schools and the NHS; into the benefits system and employment policies; into new international trade deals; and into our national commitments for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable international development.

Now is our chance to create a Better Food Britain, to achieve a system that enables everyone to eat well, and future generations to do so too.

The Campaign for a Better Food Britain is inspired and informed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and is the Sustain alliance's response to achieving these goals.

The Campaign for a Better Food Britain is supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Several Sustain projects also contribute to campaign aims, supported by other funders, such as the Network for Social Change, Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, Friends Provident Foundation, John Ellerman Foundation, JMG Foundation and the Baring Foundation.

The Campaign for a Better Food Britain is about achieving our shared vision for food, farming and fishing. This also requires work on legislation and standards affected by the UK's decision to leave the European Union - read more on Sustain's separate Brexit pages.
