Unknown meat and dairy provenance not COOL

British producer organisations have called for the Government to introduce mandatory Country of Origin Labeling for processed meat and dairy products

A group of British meat and dairy producer groups, including the NFU and the National Pig Association, has written to Andrea Leadsom, the minister now in charge of Defra, to request that processed meat and dairy products should be legally required to be labelled with their country of origin.
 
So-called COOL labelling has been contentious, with some EU producers arguing that it contravenes EU free trade laws. But the European Parliament recently supported the idea, and some other EU countries have proposed introducing the rule.
 
British farmers are convinced that consumers in this country would favour British products if they could identify them.They also argue that with Brexit looming, this could be an opportunity to establish clear and popular regulation to differentiate UK from EU produce.
