Waitrose answers call to avoid GM feed

GM Freeze's campaign scores an early victory, as Waitrose commits to using responsibly sourced  non-GM animal feed  for its meat products.

Just 10 days after Sustain member GM Freeze launched its Feed me the Truth campaign highlighting the use of GM animal feed by UK supermarkets, Waitrose has announced that it will be the first UK retailer to introduce responsibly sourced non-GM soya for its animal feed.

The soya  will come from the Danube area of Europe, and is more sustainable than soya from South America, which is often linked to rainforest destruction.

Waitrose's action has shown the falsehood of other retailers' argument that non-GM animal feed is too difficult to find. Waitrose is now selling non GM-fed pork, as well as New Zealand lamb, eggs, chicken, turkey and salmon. According to GM Freeze's ranking, it is doing much  better than the other supermarkets.
