Certified sustainable fish rising

The percentage of the global catch of wild fish that is MSC certified almost doubled in 2015, according to the 4th Global Impacts Report from the Marine Stewardship Council

Sustain member the MSC runs the world's leading ecolabel and fishery certification program. It aims to support the health of the world’s oceans by recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices, influencing the choices people make when buying seafood and ultimately putting the seafood market onto a sustainable footing.

Its latest impacts report reviews the progress of the scheme from its origins in 1997 to its current position, covering 281 fisheries in 33 countries. Although the percentage of the total wild fish catch that is MSC certified is still small, at 9.4%, certification has proved a successful tool, with the proportion of certified fish increasing year on year. Encouragingly, too, DNA testing shows that over 99% of MSC labelled products are correctly labelled.
