Citizen Food and a new Sustainability Index

Sustain member the Food Ethics Council has launched two new publications. One uses a new index to assess the sustainability of our food supply. The other looks at what would happen if everybody in the food system stopped thinking in terms of 'consumers', and started thinking in terms of 'citizens'.

Sustainable food systems: How does the UK measure up? looks at the UK's position on the Food Ethics Council's (FEC) Food Sustainability Index, and asks a range of food thinkers what needs to happen to enable the UK to rise up the ranks. FEC says that the Index is 'the best attempt by an index to assess national food systems, bringing together multiple aspects of sustainability'. But it doesn't claim to be perfect -- and FEC would like as many people as possible to read the report and comment on the Index. You can find it here.

On a different note, the Food Citizenship report is the result of a 10-month inquiry by FEC and the New Citizenship Project, working with six other organisations across the food system, to explore a future 'Citizen' food system. It constructs a vision of  what could happen if all the key players in the food system switched from a Consumer to a Citizen Mindset. Read this report here.
