Compassion in World Farming has welcomed the decision by Waitrose to guarantee at least 100 days of outdoor grazing to cows that produce liquid milk for its stores
The intensification of dairy farming in recent decades has led to cows being kept indoors for more and more of their lives. CIWF links intensification with a rise in lameness and mastitis. The decsion by Waitrose makes it the only major retailer to ensure that all supplier cows are allowed seasonal grazing. As CIWF chief executive Philip Lymbery noted, "I think that most consumers presume that all dairy cows are allowed out on pasture. Sadly, this simply isn’t the case."
