Sustain welcomes publication of 2011 Green League

Sustain congratulated People & Planet today on its publication of the only independent assessment of the environmental and ethical performance of UK universities, including measurement of their sustainable food performance.

Sustain today congratulated People & Planet for the publication of its 2011 Green League in today’s Guardian Newspaper. The Green League is the only independent assessment of the environmental and ethical performance of 142 UK universities and includes sustainable food criteria.

This year’s results show major improvements in 12 out of the 13 criteria used to rank universities, including a 10% increase in universities publishing Sustainable Food Policies.

Responding to the publication, Charlie Powell, Campaigns Director of Sustain said:

"We are delighted that, this year, even more universities have implemented sustainable food policies, leading the way by setting clear examples of good practice in the sector.  The momentum created by the People & Planet Green League shows that sustainable food policies are achievable, even in challenging economic times, and all universities should now set clear sustainability goals”.

He continued:

“However, we are disappointed that only 13 universities scored full marks for sustainable food, and that so many have yet to take any action at all in this vital area.  Good food policies are practical and popular – there really is no excuse not to have one!"
