Local organisations taking local action on food

As the Local Action on Food network grows, we will be creating a searchable map of local food projects, so that people can get involved with local projects and activities. At the moment, this page contains links to relevant regional and national organisations and national networks. If you know of others we should include, please get in touch.

Regional organisations taking local action on food

Around the UK, there is a wide range of food organisations working on sustainable food systems with local businesses, government agencies and communities.

Community Food Enterprise
Produce distribution projects in the diverse communities of Newham and the East London region help to remove barriers to healthy and affordable food.

East Anglia Food Link
Partnership promoting sustainable, resilient food systems and supply chains in the face of peak oil and climate change.

Food Up Front
Network supports people to grow food in their unused outdoor spaces in boroughs of Wandsworth, Lambeth, Merton and Southwark.

Fresh Ideas Network
Supports community food projects in the south east to make local foods more accessible and affordable in disadvantaged areas.

Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency
Promotes, develops, and supports the co-operative/social enterprise sector as part of local sustainable economic development in the diverse communities of Greenwich.

Growing Communities
Growing Communities is a social enterprise run by local people in Hackney, East London. It runs a successful food trading scheme supporting local growers and farmers through an organic vegetable box scheme, urban food growing and a weekly organic farmers' market. It is also developing a mentoring scheme to help others replicate this successful and financially proven model.

Hampshire Fare
Hampshire Fare works with producers and farmers in Hampshire as well as shops, restaurants, schools, hospitals, government agencies, the media and the public to get everyone working together and consuming the quality produce that is grown, reared and produced in Hampshire and surrounds.

Highlands Food Network
An alliance of farmers, retailers, projects, and community groups working to make locally grown food more available in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Leicestershire Food Links
Leicestershire Food Links is a not-for-profit co-operative company helping Leicestershire food producers get in touch with consumers.

Mid Wales Food and Land Trust
The Trust manages a portfolio of projects that make a significant contribution to building a sustainable local and regional economy for Mid Wales. Projects include promoting cooking skills, consultancy services, work with schools, support for farmers' markets and promoting food tourism.

Newham Food Access Partnership
Strategies to improve access to healthy diets in Newham with a vision of equitable health for all by 2012.

North East Food Chain (CIC)
Not-for-profit group selling seasonal produce to food co-ops and individual customers throughout the North East of England.

Organic Lea
Social space and growing co-op in Waltham Forest transports seasonal produce from its allotment sites through a fleet of bicycle trailers.

Somerset Community Food
Supports a network of community food projects in Somerset and is currently completing a project to employ and train food access workers in disadvantaged areas.

Somerset Food Links
Developing a sustainable local food system throughout the county and neighbouring areas via a range of projects.

South East Food Group Partnership
SEFGP represents and supports local food groups and producers in the South East of England with marketing, trade development, business support and training.

Surrey Food Links
Surrey Food Links aims to champion and represent Surrey food and drink producers and introduce a wider audience to the benefits of buying local food.

National organisations taking local action on food

Campaign to Protect Rural England
CPRE is a national organisation campaigning for a sustainable future for the English countryside, a vital but undervalued environmental, economic and social asset to the nation. It highlights threats and promotes positive solutions.

F3 The Local Food Consultants
Provides market research, business planning and consultancy services to organisations and enterprises involved in local food and farming and related sustainability initiatives.

Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens
Supports community-managed green spaces and is the national face of the community farm and garden movement.

Food Matters
Food Matters is an independent not-for-profit consultancy supporting individuals and organisations working towards more sustainable, equitable food systems. It also runs FAB! a flexible programme of workshops, training and materials to provide tools, skills and knowledge to help manage mood and behaviour through improved diet.

Friends of the Earth
Friends of the Earth is a national campaign and membership organisation working to protect and improve the conditions for life on Earth, now and for the future. It runs a Real Food campaign, aiming to ensure that everyone has access to food that is fresh, affordable, locally produced, free from pesticide residues and genetically modified ingredients, and which provides a fair income to farmers.

New Economics Foundation
The New Economics Foundation is an independent 'think and do' tank. It aims to improve quality of life by promoting innovative solutions that challenge mainstream thinking on economic, environment and social issues.

Soil Association
The UK's leading campaigning and certification organisation for organic food and farming.

Women's Environment Network
Educating, empowering and informing the public on environmental issues affecting women, including food, health, and waste.

Funding for local action on food

One of the services provided by the Local Action on Food network is regular updates on funding opportunities relevant to local food projects. To join the network, click here. A link to the Big Lottery's Local Food programme is below.

Local Food Fund
Big Lottery fund coordinated by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts, which distributes grants to a variety of food-related projects to help make locally grown food accessible and affordable to local communities.

Local Action on Food: The Local Action on Food network was run as part of the Big Lottery funded Making Local Food Work programme, 2007 to 2012. It has now closed.
