News: Battle of the food campaigns
The "Veganuary" campaign has released its participation statistics for 2021 and say more than 580,000 took part. But concern over the evidence and impact of a number of food campaigns led farmers, farmer unions and bodies – such as the NFU and AHDB - to mount counter campaigns this year. A key question is what should we all be eating for a balanced and environmentally-friendly diet, and the answer is much more complicated then we might want it to be.

The new report from IPES-Food (International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems) titled 'The New Science of Sustainable Food Systems' argues that too often food problems have been considered in isolation, rather than a joint consideration of issues including impact on health and nutrition, environmental degradation as well as power imbalances.

News: Labour's food bank commitment
Labour has promised Scotland’s 167 food banks £5000 each should it win in May’s election. More than 117,000 food bank parcels were given out by Scotland’s food banks in 2014, compared to just 5,700 in 2011. Sustain has compiled all political parties stance on food poverty - find out how Labour’s response to food poverty compares. News: Scottish Food Commission Announced
In a bid to improve diet related ill health, the Scottish Food Secretary Richard Lochhead has announced the 16 members of the new Scottish Food Commission. Scotland has one of the poorest diet-related health records in the world. The Food Commission, set up in the wake of the Good Food Nation report and consultation, hopes to help reverse this. The chair has been announced as former head chef Shirley Spear who will be working with industry, education and public health experts to improve the country's attitude to food.
