Project officer Hannah Williams has been conducting research on the activities of Young Co-operatives in schools and the impact of new regulations to improve nutrition standards. During Enterprise Week Hannah ran workshops with students to find out their views and explore obstacles that might hinder the transition to healthy snacking. She has made arrangements with Fairtrade vending companies to supply Fairtrade drinks machines to young co-operatives and is organising “better-for-you” events for Fairtrade Fortnight in March to promote healthy options. Hannah will be releasing online guidance and promotional materials in preparation for the forthcoming events, some of which are already available on the Sustain website.
Healthy Schools & Fair Trade: Sustain was contracted by Young Co-operatives to assess the implications of the new school food standards for fair-trade food and drink products sold in schools. This work was supported by a grant from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
