Important life skills
Being able to choose and prepare basic healthy meals is an essential life skill. Without them, people are forced to rely on processed ready meals or fast food and it is difficult or impossible for people to adopt healthy lifestyles.

Cooking in schools
The most effective way to ensure that everyone learns basic practical food preparation skills is to include them on the National Curriculum so that they are taught to every child in every school.

In 2008, the Government announced that at least 24 hours of practical cooking lessons would be compulsory for every secondary school pupil. However, the school curriculum is now being reviewed, and this provision is at risk.

The Children’s Food Campaign is calling for a minimum of 24 hours of practical food preparation lessons to be included in the National Curriculum at each of the first three Key Stages (infant, junior and early secondary school). This represents less than one per cent of the teaching time at each level, yet would ensure that every child left school with the skills and knowledge to provide themselves and their families with a healthy diet.
