The diet of children in the UK has been described by the Chief Medical Officer as a ‘timebomb’ which is in urgent need of defusing.

The facts speak for themselves. The 2000 National Diet and Nutrition Survey found that:

  • 92% of children consume more saturated fat than is recommended
  • 86% consume too much sugar
  • 72% consume too much salt
  • 96% do not get enough fruit and vegetables. More recent figures continue to indicate that children continually fail to eat enough fruit and vegetables, and consume excessive amounts of fat, sugar and salt.

Poor diet can affect children’s behaviour, concentration and ability to learn. It also has serious consequences for their health, both in childhood and in later life. Find out more.
