Covid-19 and Children’s Food: Parents’ Priorities for Building Back Better

This briefing summarises insights from over 750 parents across the UK on how life under lockdown during Covid-19 impacted on their children's food intake and preferences, and their views on future policies for tackling food insecurity, improving the school food offer and building a healthier food environment for children.


This briefing summarises the findings from research with parents conducted during June and July 2020 to find out their experiences of feeding their children during the period of school closures and lockdown due to Covid-19.

The report paints a vivid picture of both positive and negative changes to children's food intake and dietary preferences, including home cooking, consumption of fruit and vegetables, snacking and comfort eating.

Parents were also asked their views on priorities for building back better as schools reopen in September 2020 - from ensuring increased numbers of children experiencing food insecurity can access free school meals, to the health and nutrition of school food and wider policies to build a healthier food environment - at home, at school, in shops and on the street.
