Hungry London orchards to be fed with comfrey

The Urban Orchard Project is celebrating London Tree Week by planting comfrey around all the thousands of fruit and nut trees it has planted in the city since 2009

The Urban Orchard Project works with communities to plant, manage, restore and harvest orchards in urban areas across the UK. In London, it is currently mobilizing volunteer 'Master Orchardists' to help deliver and plant comfrey plants with orchard groups across the city. The plan is that orchards can then run their own comfrey planting days for the community and promote them as part of London Tree Week, which runs from Saturday 28th May to Sunday 5th June.

The lush leaves of the comfrey plant have long been known to gardeners as a powerful natural fertiliser. The plant's deep roots mine nutrients from the soil, which are then returned to shallower-rooted crops when the comfrey is dug into the earth.
