Retailer seeks partners to distribute donated food

Sainbury's is looking for qualified charities to expand its distribution network for surplus and donated food

With French supermarkets now legally obliged to donate surplus food to charity and a Bill pending that would bring the same regulation to the UK, Sainsbury's seems to be moving in the same direction of its own accord. It is expanding its 'Local Food Partner Programme' and soliciting applications from charities to join the network. Once accepted, charities can collect dry and tinned food donated by customers and/or fresh food donated by Sainsbury's to distribute in the community. Applicants must be a registered charity, have appropriate Food Hygiene certification and be able to collect donated food regularly from the partner store. More information and an application form here. See Sustain's work on moving 'beyond the foodbank' here.
