Government kicks children’s futures into the long grass. Email your MP to stop the #AttackOnHealth
We all want our children to grow up healthy. After years of campaigning, and backed by huge public support, the Government passed new laws earlier in 2022 to shift the constant stream of unhealthy food advertising on our TVs and online towards healthier products.
However, instead of bringing in the new rules for food advertisers on 1 January 2023, it has just introduced an amendment to delay them for almost three more years.
The Government’s plans to delay the introduction of healthier food advertising laws is a disservice to children’s health. It is not fair to children. It’s not fair to families who more than ever need healthy, affordable food to be in the spotlight, rather than allowing companies to spend millions advertising junk food and making huge profits from it. And it’s not fair for future generations, putting them at greater risk of diet-related diseases, whilst adding billions of pounds to future healthcare costs for taxpayers.
The Government has committed to halving childhood obesity by 2030. We are appealing to them urgently to cut the delay in half too to put them in a better place to meet their own target. We know it is possible to bring in the 9pm watershed and online restriction by 1 January 2024.
There are just a few days to act before Parliament breaks up for Christmas. We need as many MPs as possible to take action to prevent this disastrous delay.

Children's Food Campaign: Better food and food teaching for children in schools, and protection of children from junk food marketing are the aims of Sustain's high-profile Children's Food Campaign. We also want clear food labelling that can be understood by everyone, including children.
