Animal welfare now a global concern

With winners drawn from all over the world, Compassion in World Farming's Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards show that the public and food businesses everywhere are taking this issue seriously

The Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards, organised by Sustain member Compassion in World Farming and held recently in Berlin, were a global affair, with winners from North and South America, Australasia, China and Europe.

Chief Executive Philip Lymbery commented that the scale of the event demonstrated that awareness of farm animal welfare is rising in the public and business consciousness all over the world.

Lymbery pointed to a whole raft of ‘firsts’ in this year's awards. 'Not only did we start to raise awareness of farm animal welfare in South America by presenting a Chilean hen farmer, Pablo Albarren from Ecoterra, with a Good Egg Award, the first ever Award in the region, but there was also the first Good Egg Award presented for quail egg production, and the first full Good Pig Awards in Italy.'
