The UK government is carrying out a once-in-a-generation review of bread composition, labelling and marketing laws but will not commit to proposals to protect shoppers and small bakery owners from misleading loaf labelling and marketing.
Shoppers have the right to know what we’re buying and small bakery owners deserve to be able to compete on fair terms. Yet the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is ignoring the Real Bread Campaign’s proposals for full ingredient declaration and meaningful, legal definitions of commonly-used but often misleading marketing terms such as ‘freshly baked’ and ‘sourdough’.
Defra is refusing to meet with the Real Bread Campaign until after the consultation but shoppers and bakery owners cannot be silenced. The Bread law review is an unique chance to level the playing field for small, independent bakeries which provide delicious, real bread, as well as community, jobs and business opportunities for our local highstreets.
