York Food Poverty Alliance

Aims: Increase understanding about food poverty in York, its causes, impacts and interrelationships; Raise awareness about work already underway in the city, enhance coordination between agencies and shape effective future working; Provide a collaborative shared platform for knowledge exchange, skills and resources; Raise city aspirations by bringing new thought leadership and good practice to the city’s food poverty agenda with an emphasis on reducing food poverty in long-term sustainable ways.

Members: City of York Council (Public Health Department, Financial Inclusion Team, One Planet York Strategy); One Planet York (60+ Local Organisations ); Your Cafe - Volorg (turns waste food into pay-as-you-feel meals); Support for Success (community based learning/devt.); Tang Hall Big Local and Tang Hall Community Centre (food access projects in deprived area of York); Other food/poverty groups in process of joining

How York Food Poverty Alliance is taking action to help tackle food poverty

Improving coordination and navigation of the local welfare safety net
Supporting services that provide financial crisis support and advice
Ensuring children’s access to food 365 days a year through support of holiday food provision, breakfast clubs and uptake of free school meals
Empowering experts by experience in the alliance’s strategic work
Developing and implementing a food poverty action plan
Ensuring all residents have physical access to good food
Supporting alternative retail, e.g. community shops, cooperatives
