Parliamentary debate to be held on sugary drinks duty

A debate will be held on 30 November to consider a sugary drinks duty, as championed by Sustain and Jamie Oliver.

The Petitions Committee has agreed to hold a parliamentary debate on a sugary drinks duty: Monday 30 November, 4.30pm-7.30pm, in Westminster Hall.  This is a further result of Sustain’s joint petition with Jamie Oliver following his Sugar Rush documentary, which now has over 150,000 signatures.  You’ll be able to follow the debate live online at http://parliamentlive.tv/Commons.

Ben Reynolds, Sustain's Deputy Coordinator, commented “We are pleased to see that following the public support for this duty to be considered, that it will receive proper debate by MPs. We hope that following its inclusion in the recommendations from Public Health England’s latest sugar report, this is firmly on the Government’s list of options for tackling diet related disease in its forthcoming Childhood Obesity Strategy.”
