Putting participation into practice

Participatory methods are widely hailed as useful ways to motivate and guide grass-roots activity, but they can be hard to use effectively. Sustain member Food Matters, which specialises in the approach, has produced some tips.

Food Matters is a Brighton-based group that works for sustainable food systems 'from the top down and the bottom up'. The second part of that description involves, among other things, facilitating a lot of participatory work to ensure that food plans, strategies and policies accurately reflect what local communities want and feel they can accomplish.
 
To launch its new website, Food Matters has put together some Top Tips for facilitating participatory processes. When done well facilitation looks easy, but a lot depends on getting some of the little things right. The Top Tips are based on Food Matters' experience of facilitating various participatory processes with different groups of people in different situations.
