SUGAR SMART Cornwall launch celebrates healthy workplaces

Cornwall launched their SUGAR SMART campaign at the Workplace Health Awards event 26 February. Employers across public, private and third sectors were recognised for their great work improving staff health and wellbeing in the county.

Cornwall is leading the way on engaging workplaces as part of SUGAR SMART by being the first to make sugar reduction activities a requirement for obtaining a Healthy Workplace certification.

Cornwall's launch highlighted their great work with the county's Workplace Health initiative, which helps employers of all sizes to support the physical, emotional and social wellbeing for their staff.

The 10th annual Workplace Health Awards ceremony – held at the Royal Cornwall Showground - celebrated the efforts of businesses from across Cornwall, which included food producers and manufacturers, schools, statutory agencies and even a clothing company. 38 businesses in total were awarded recognition for the work they are doing to support their staff in health and wellbeing.

Award winner Environment Agency Cornwall ceased offering sugary snacks during their emergency management sessions, which find staff working overtime and relying on snacks to hand, offering instead healthier options to keep them going. Fellow winner food manufacturer Proper Cornish ran workshops during office time to educate staff on hidden sugars in everyday foods and ideas for healthier swaps, alongside improving the food on offer at their tea stations.

Cabinet portfolio holder for Children and Wellbeing Cllr Sally Hawken said:

People are a company’s greatest asset and a happy workforce helps create a healthy workforce.  Work is such as big part of our lives – a workplace that is also sociable and cares about our health can provide an everyday boost to our mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.

SUGAR SMART Cornwall is led by Cornwall Council’s Wellbeing and Public Health team along with the Cornwall Food Foundation, Cornwall Council health promotion service, Brighter Smiles and Little Kitchen Magicians. Businesses, restaurants, tourist attractions and workplaces are called on to sign up to the campaign and make pledges to reduce sugar consumption within their spheres of influence.

SUGAR SMART is a campaign of Sustain and Jamie Oliver. It is currently the feature campaign of the Sustainable Food Cities network.
