Taxing sweets and fizzy drinks in Massachusetts

State representative Kay Khan has proposed a bill that would put a 6.25% sales tax on candy and soda in Massachusetts.

These products are currently exempt from the 6.25% sales tax as they are covered under the blanket sales tax exemption on food in the state. But supporters of the bill said a tax could cut consumption by 7-8%, based on data from other states, generate $52 million revenue and improve public health. The National Confectioners Association oppose the bill. Support Sustain's Children's Food Campaign
