Panary helps Campaign to put Real Bread On The Menu

Paul Merry of Dorset-based baking school Panary is supporting the Real Bread Campaign's mission to help put Real Bread On The Menu of more public sector canteens around the country by offering cooks a generous 30% discount on selected courses.

Paul Merry said: ‘I'm very happy to be involved in helping to ensure that taxpayers’ money is spent on providing delicious Real Bread to some of the people in our society most at need of healthy, nutritious food.’

Chris Young of the Campaign added ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for public sector cooks to pick up skills and confidence to be able to put Real Bread On The Menu from one of the country’s most respected teachers of traditional bread making.’

The offer is open to cooks in public sector institution (such as schools or care homes) kitchens that don't currently make bread from scratch but are planning and equipped to do so. Prospective students simply need to visit the On The Menu page at www.realbreadcampaign.org to download, complete and return a short questionnaire. The Campaign will then put eligible applicants in touch with Panary to book a class at the discounted rate.

The Campaign is also working with Bordeaux Quay in Bristol to set a date for a workshop in the autumn, and still wants to hear from more teachers of professional bread making who’d also like to offer discounted or bursary places in their classes to public sector cooks. Public sector cooks already baking Real Bread are wanted as case studies, too.

The Real Bread Campaign is Part of Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming, and is funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food programme. The Campaign champions loaves produced as locally as possible without the use of artificial additives, and finds ways to make bread better for us, better for our communities and better for the planet.

Panary students benefit from the guidance of Merry, a master baker and teacher with over thirty years’ experience, in the atmosphere of a working watermill in rural Dorset. Panary also offers a consultancy service to people working in the craft sector of the baking industry.

Local Food has been developed by a consortium of 15 national environmental organisations, and is managed on their behalf by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT). Supported by the Big Lottery Fund's Changing Spaces programme, Local Food has distributed grants to a variety of food related projects to make locally grown food more accessible. www.localfoodgrants.org

The Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT) is a registered charity, incorporated by Royal Charter, to promote conservation and manage environmental programmes throughout the whole of the UK. It has established management systems for holding and distributing funds totalling more than £20 million annually to environmental projects across the UK.

The Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces programme was launched in November 2005 to help communities enjoy and improve their local environments. The programme funds a range of activities from local food schemes and farmers markets, to education projects teaching people about the local environment.

The Big Lottery Fund, the largest of the National Lottery good cause distributors, has been rolling out £2 million in Lottery good cause money every 24 hours to health, education, environment and charitable causes across the UK. www.biglotteryfund.org.uk.
