Pressure for Sugary Drinks Tax mounts: press roundup

The Daily Mail and the Independent have reported a change in heart from the British Retail Consortium, which represents British retailers, on sugar policy, while The Times and the Mail report a government U Turn on sugar tax.

On the 4th January The Daily Mail quoted the BRC’s Andrew Opie: ‘We believe we’ll make the most progress by having targets for reducing sugar from those categories contributing the most to excessive consumption by children, as part of a wider reduction strategy.’

‘To be effective, they need to apply to all food companies, which is why they need to be mandatory … It means we see change across the board and those companies that are more progressive in removing sugar are not penalised.’

On January 7th, The Independent covered new research published in the Lancet showing dramatic effects of cutting sugar in drinks on cases of diabetes. They also reported a change of heart by the BRC. On the same day, The Times and the Daily Mail reported that the sugary drinks tax was ‘back on the table’ in Whitehall.  Support Sustain’s campaign for a sugary drinks duty.
