New brew from waste bread

Anti-foodwaste group Feedback and craft beer maker Hackney Brewery have teamed up to produce Toast Ale, made from bread that would otherwise be thrown away

Foodwaste campaigner Tristram Stuart wanted to highlight the extent to which bread was being wasted, so he commissioned a London brewery to find a use for it. Nearly half (44%) of bread in the UK, including 24 million slices a year in homes, is thrown away. Toast Ale uses a slice of bread for every bottle, so enjoying a  brew can also help prevent waste. The beer is brewed with malted barley and oat husks, as well as Bramling Cross and Chinook hops, and, of course, bread. The bread is said to add caramel notes that balance the bitter hops, resulting in a smooth, unique taste. All profits go to Feedback, to support the fight against food waste.
