New London Plan: how will it affect you?

Time is running out to ensure the new plan for the capital helps create a healthier food system for all Londoners. London Food Link is calling on people to take action before the 2 March, so that free drinking water, protection of land for growing and limiting access to junk food, are all firmly on the agenda.

The detailed 10 year plan sets out the spatial vision for the city and includes policies that will affect development and planning, as well as important general principles for creating a healthier, fairer city.

London Food Link, in its role as the voice for good food in the capital, will publish a full response to the document, to support others with their responses.  This will cover:

  • the welcome inclusion of a ban on fast food outlets near school and commitment to improve access to drinking water fountains;
  • the lack of detail and commitment on increasing access to healthier food retail;
  • a need for more recognition of food growing and agriculture, to ensure existing sites are protected and that there is more opportunity to grow food in the city;
  • stronger support for the protection of open land and retention of soil quality in the Green Belt so that land is used for growing food and not held in the hope that it can be developed;
  • more support for small and emerging sustainable food scene.
