Healthy eating for children in care

Three national organizations have come together to address the difficulties cared-for children face in adopting healthy eating practices.

Childrens Food Trust, The Fostering Network and the National Association of Care Catering have formed a partnership to help children in care, and the people who cater for them, to build the skills needed to choose and prepare healthy foods. Cared-for children are as likely as any others to have a diet high in sugar, salt and saturated fat, and low in vegetables and fruit. But they may face added obstacles to eating healthily if they have experienced neglect, or come from environments where food provision was erratic or inappropriate. The partners say the topic has been neglected, and hope the project will collect evidence as well as identifying the best ways to help children, carers and caterers. Details can be found here, and see Sustain's work on the Children's Food Campaign and the Children's Health Fund.
