Citizens Jury on the Future of Food in or out of Europe

A free, one-day public event in London offers a chance to debate how the outcome of the EU referendum will affect Britain's food and agriculture

On 12 May, members of the public, expert witnesses and a panel of jurors will gather to hear evidence on the likely implications of a UK decision to remain in or leave the EU.

12 jurors, drawn at random from those expressing interest in the event, will hear evidence from eight witnesses. Each witness has 10 minutes to present their case, followed by 20 minutes to be cross-questioned by the jurors. They will then have one hour to deliberate their verdict on the following statement: “The future of our food system would be best served by the UK exiting from/remaining in the EU.”

Confirmed speakers include former Labour MP Joan Walley, Professor Tim Lang (City University), Guy Watson (founder of Riverford Organic), and Vicki Hird (War on Want).

The event lasts from10am-5pm, and takes place at the Duke of Cambridge organic pub and restaurant, Islington. It is organised by the Food Research Collaboration, a project that brings together academics and NGOs working on food, based at the Centre for Food Policy at City University London, and Coventry University’s Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience (CAWR).
