Teacher's notes

  • Composting kitchen waste could eliminate 40% of household waste.
  • 75% of allotment holders compost their kitchen waste.
  • Londoners produce 883 000 tonnes of organic waste each year.
  • In London, compostable waste with an estimated value of £6.1 million is thrown away every year. It has been estimated that 350 jobs would be created if efforts were made to collect and use this material.
  • Around 14% of city dwellers grow their own fruit and vegetables.
  • People who grow their own fruit and vegetables tend to eat more than the UK average of 3 portions of fruit and vegetables per day.

Ask the children to explore growing food and composting at home:

  • How can we build a compost bin?
  • What materials can be composted?
  • What can we grow?
  • What can we do if we don't have a garden?
