Geography
1. Which foods come from other countries?
Back

Geography: 1b and 5a
PSHE: 1a and 2j

You will need:
A map of the world
A selection of foods with the country of origin marked on

Display a selection of food items that have their country of origin marked on the packaging (pre-wrapped fruits and vegetables from supermarkets are a good source for this type of information). Ask the children to guess where these foods come from.

Allow them to examine the packaging to discover the country of origin and ask them to find these on a map.

Calculate the approximate distance that each of these foods has travelled.

Ask the children to explain how they think the foods are transported and to suggest any consequences of this process.

Taking The Message Home

  • Tell the children to look at home for examples of food from other countries. Use a map of the world to display a collection of labels from the foods.
  • Ask the children to find examples of foods from the local area.
  • Find the item of food that was produced the shortest / greatest distance away from your home or school.
