Pizza

 

 

You will need:
A selection of ready made pizza and ingredients to make pizzas

Evaluate a range of pizzas, for their nutritional value, attractiveness and ease of eating.
Design and make a pizza which conforms with specific criteria, e.g. a 'healthy' pizza topping, miniature pizzas for a children's party or a pizza that is suitable for vegetarians.
Evaluate the finished pizzas against the original design criteria.

Fruit salad

 

 

You will need:
A range of fruits

Look at a range of ingredients and consider how they might be combined to make an appealing fruit salad.
Design and make fruit salads that conform with specific criteria, e.g. to appeal to a group of nursery age children, a fruit salad that could be served with ice cream, a fruit salad that could be eaten by people standing up at a party, or a fruit salad made only of summer fruits.
Evaluate the finished fruit salads against the original design criteria.

Fruit sauce or filling for pancakes, scones, muffins, yoghurt, rice pudding etc.

 

 

You will need:
Fruits (apples, berries (fresh or frozen), plums, cherries, pineapple), icing sugar,
spices (cinnamon)

Look at a range of ingredients and consider how they might be used to make an appealing fruit filling or sauce to be used with pancakes, scones, muffins, yoghurt and other deserts.
Design and make fillings/sauces that conform with specific criteria, e.g. a sauce that can be served hot, a filling that isn't too runny or a filling/sauce made of berries. Frozen mixed berries are ideal and are usually cheaper - just blend half the fruit with a little icing sugar and then mix with the remaining half. Blended canned mangoes with orange juice also makes a delicious sauce, perfect for mixing with plain yoghurt or custard.
Evaluate the finished fillings and sauces against the original design criteria (i.e. made of fruit).

Italian/Greek salad

 

 

You will need:
Mozzarella, tomatoes, avocado, peppers (red & yellow), spring onion, rocket, basil, vinaigrette

Look at a range of ingredients and consider how they might complement each other with regard to taste, colour and texture.
Evaluate a range of ready-made Italian/Greek salads for taste, colour, texture and nutritional content. Descide which are the tastiest and healthiest options.
Design and make salads that conform with specific criteria, e.g. a salad that has no dressing, a colourful salad. Evaluate the finished products against the original design criteria.

Dips and crudites

 

 

You will need:
A range of dips such as yoghurt dips, salsa, humous, guacamole. Vegetables suitables for dips.

Look at a range of ready-made dips and consider their taste, texture, appearance and implications for healthy eating.
Evaluate a range of vegetables, such as carrots, celery, peppers and mushrooms, and consider how they might be used with dips to make an appealing snack.
Design and make snacks that conform with specific criteria, e.g. a snack that can be eaten by children at playtime, a snack that can be served at a party or a colourful snack. Evaluate the finished snacks against the original design criteria.

Kebabs

 

 

You will need:
Fruits and vegetables that can be skewered and used on kebabs, kebab sticks

Look at a range of fruits and/or vegetables and consider how they might be used to make an appealing fruit and/or vegetable kebab.
Design and make kebabs that conform with specific criteria, e.g. a fruit kebab, a colourful vegetable kebab or a kebab made from cheese and vegetables.
Evaluate the finished kebabs against the original design criteria.

 

The following foods provide similar opportunities;

  • Banana splits
  • Pasta sauces
  • Soups
  • Fruit crumbles
  • Filled pitta breads
  • Other salads such as salad Nicoise
  • Fruit jelly (lay cut up fruit in a container and pour over jelly made from orange juice and gelatine)
 

D&T: 5c

Design and make a banana holder to be used at home. (Bananas should not be stored with other fruits as they cause these to decay faster, unless of course, you are wanting unripe fruit to ripen faster.)

Design and make a germination tray to be used in the classroom. Tell the children to take account of the requirements of the plants; air, light, water, drainage, temperature.

Design and make a hanging basket that can be taken home. Tell them to consider the following requirements; watering, drainage, suspension, types of plants.

Design and make a compost bin for the school garden. Tell them to consider the following requirements; air, water, drainage, turning the mixture, access, weather-proofing of materials.

Design and make a planter for the school playground. Tell them to consider the following requirements; cost and availability of material, space, drainage, weather-proofing of materials.
