(optional). Salad ingredients (e.g. tomatoes, lettuce, herbs,
cress, avocado, spring onions, apples, cabbage, rocket, watercress,
carrots)

Evaluate a selection of pre-packed salads.
Discuss how different ingredients can add taste, colour, texture
and odour.
Discuss combinations of ingredients which complement each other.
Discuss the importance of appearance.
Focused practical task
Investigate and evaluate different types of dressings and decide
which are the healthier options.
Show the children how to prepare and present some of the ingredients.
Investigate the use of other ingredients (e.g fruit, cheese, pasta,
potatoes, rice, nuts, egg, meat, fish) and consider their effect
upon the taste, appearance, texture and nutritional content of the
salad.
Discuss how many portions of fruit and vegetables would be provided
by a plate of salad.
Design and make assignment
Design and make a plate of salad to be eaten as the main meal for
a group of people at lunch on a Saturday at home.
Explain what ingredients and equipment is available.
Invent a name for your salad and explain how you might persuade
people to try it.
Eat and evaluate your salad against the original design criteria
(i.e. as the main meal at lunch for a group of people on a Saturday
at home).
