You will need:
A selection of packed lunches.
|
Investigative, disassembly and evaluative activities
Investigate which items children would most like to have as part
of their packed lunch.
Investigate the contents of a selection of packed lunch boxes.
Discuss the contents in relation to the Balance of Good Health plate
and guidelines about healthy eating.
Discuss how the contents could be adapted to include more fruit
and vegetables.
Investigate ways of keeping the contents in their best condition
from morning until lunch time, recognising that storage space may
be limited in schools and that some of the contents (e.g. yoghurt)
may be best chilled while others (e.g. apples) are fine in ambient
temperatures.
Focused practical tasks
Show the children how to prepare and pack a number of items which
include fruit or vegetables, e.g. carrot sticks, celery, dips, fresh
fruit, dried fruit or fruit juice.
Explain how you can ensure that a packed lunch is prepared under
hygienic conditions.
Design and make assignment
Design and make a healthy packed lunch that will appeal to a large
number of children.
Challenge the children to include 2 or 3 portions of fruit and vegetables.
Draw a diagram to show the contents and how the various elements
contribute to a healthy diet.
Eat and evaluate the packed lunches against the original design
criteria (i.e. a healthy packed lunch that will appeal to a large
number of children).
