You will need:
Fruit drinks (can be brought in by the children)

Investigative, disassembly and evaluative activities

Find out about the children's most popular types of fruit drinks.
Investigate the ingredients of these drinks and decide if they contribute to a healthy diet. A lot of fruit drinks are high in added sugar and fit into the fatty and sugary foods section on the Balance of Good Health.
Taste a number of different fruit drinks. Record information about taste, colour, smell and popularity.

Focused practical task

Investigate different methods of obtaining juice from fruit, such as blending, squeezing, using juicers, from canned, frozen and fresh fruit.
Evaluate different utensils for obtaining juice, such as blenders, juicers, pestle and mortars, citrus squeezers.
Investigate the use of vegetables in juice drinks.
Investigate the use of other ingredients, e.g. milk, water, yoghurt, ice, ice-cream, sugar and honey, and discuss the impact on the contribution to a healthy diet.

Design and make assignment

Design and make a fruit drink made from a blend of different fruits that could be sold in your school.
Explain what equipment is available.
Encourage the children to test their ideas by making samples as prototypes.
Invent a name for the drink and explain how people might be persuaded to try it.
Describe the drink and explain how it was made.
Taste and evaluate the drink against the original design criteria (i.e. a fruit drink made from a blend of different fruits that could be sold in school).
