PSHE: 1a, 2a and 3a

Remind the children of the basic campaign messages of the Grab 5! project:

Grab 5! campaign messages:

Eating fruit and vegetables keeps you healthy now and as you get
older.
Everyone needs to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a
day (a portion is roughly how much you can fit in your hand).
Eating fruit and vegetables can help you look good.
Everyone should eat as many different types of fruit and vegetables
as they can (fresh, frozen, tinned, dried and juiced fruit and
vegetables all count).
Fruit and vegetables are colourful, tasty and nutritious.

Hold a brainstorming session in which the children are asked to consider the benefits of eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, the factors that might stop people from doing this, and what can be done to encourage people to eat more.

The benefits of eating 5 aday

The barriers that stop people eating 5 aday

What we could do to get people to eat more

Makes you healthy

May help prevent us getting heart disease and some cancers

Helps you avoid getting fat

Gives you the vitamins and minerals you need for healthy teeth, bones and blood

Children don't like the taste

You can’t always find them in the shop

Parents don't like to waste money on fruit that their children won’t eat

Fruit and vegetables don’t fill you up

Tell them to try different fruits and vegetables as often as possible

Suggest ways to make them easier to eat, for example by cutting them up, making a fruit salad or fruit kebabs

Eat them with different foods, for example put sweet corn on pizzas

Get school to sell fruit at break time

Learn about healthy eating at school

Don’t allow crisps and sweets at school

Try different ways of cooking vegetables

Grow vegetables in a school garden and tomatoes on the windowsills
