8. Reading food labels

You will need:
'Guide to Reading Food Labels' poster, The Food Commission (provided with this pack or tel: 020 7837 2250 for more copies)
Some food labels (children could bring them from home)
Enough items of packaged food

Give pairs of children 1 or 2 items of packaged foods. Ask the children to find some of the following pieces of information;

Tell them to record the information and explain what this tells them about the product. Invite each pair to report back to the class about what they have found about their items.

Ask the children to design the packaging or labelling of a new food product, such as a vegetable cutlet. They should refer to the information on the poster to ensure that their design complies with the regulations. An empty food box could be used as a base for their new designs which could then be put on display and the children asked to explain them.
