PSHE: 3a
Science: Sc2: 2a, 2b

You will need:
Activity worksheet 7; What’s in the food we eat?
Activity worksheet 1; Blank Balance of Good Health plate.

Using activity worksheet 7, ask the children to use the information to answer a series of questions;

  • What sort of foods provide iron (bread and other cereals, meat and fish) / fibre (fruit and vegetables, wholewheat bread, cereals and potatoes) / antioxidants (fruit and vegetables)?
  • Why do our bodies need vitamins and minerals (for healthy teeth, bones, blood and nervous system. B vitamins are important for releasing energy from the foods we eat) / fibre (for avoiding constipation, for a healthy digestive system and for avoiding bowel cancer)?
  • What nutrients are found in fish (protein, fats, minerals, like iron and zinc, and vitamins, such as the B vitamins) / apples (antioxidants (including vitamins A and C), some minerals and fibre) / cheese (calcium, vitamins, fat and protein) / potatoes (vitamins and fibre)?

Ask the children to display the information about nutrients in the table on the worksheet.

Ask them to use the information to write a leaflet designed to persuade people of the importance of a balanced diet in maintaining good health. The activity could be done as a competition and the leaflet could be given to parents, staff and other classes.
