Activity worksheet 8: Looking at the role of TV ads

Ask the children to name some TV advertisements for food. What are their favourite advertisements and why? Do they think they eat certain foods because of the advertisements they have seen on TV? What foods are these? Is this a good or bad thing and why?

Explain that the class is going to carry out a role play to discuss whether or not the laws around TV advertising of children’s food should be changed.

Divide the children into groups of three or four and give each group one of the following roles to play:

1. Parent Power: a group of parents wanting their children to eat healthier food and worried about the influence of advertising.

2. Children's voice: an organisation of young people promoting the interests of children.

3. A Government agency concerned with food and health issues.

Give each group a copy of activity worksheet 8. Ask the children to read the briefing and use the information to prepare for a meeting with a spokesperson from the food and advertising industry (played by the teacher). The spokesperson will be arguing against changes in the rules governing food advertising and children. These arguments are listed in the table on the worksheet. Tell the children to complete the table with counter arguments that they, as either a parent, child or government representative would use. Some examples of counter arguments are listed in the following table:

Carry out the role play allowing each group to respond to each of the arguments. At the end of the session, each group should explain their feelings about the current situation and outline any future action that they will be taking.
