Section 1: The Grab 5! Curriculum Pack
How to use this pack
Back

The Grab 5! Curriculum Pack is split into three sections:

  • Section one introduces the pack and provides background to Grab 5!

  • Section two forms the core of the pack and addresses children's eating habits. It is not necessary to work through the whole section systematically, although activities do follow a logical progression. The section starts by getting children to look at what they know about healthy eating already. They are then encouraged to look at what they are eating now and what they should be eating to have a healthy diet. Finally, they are asked to look at how they could improve their own diets. There are links that can be made with a number of different curriculum subjects throughout this section. In particular it can form the background of much PSHE work. For example, the PSHE curriculum requires children to learn about 'what makes a healthy lifestyle', 'to talk and write about their opinions, and explain their views, on issues that affect themselves and society', to 'take responsibility' and to 'make real choices and decisions' for the benefit of themselves, others and the environment.

  • Section three looks at particular curriculum subjects and suggests food and healthy eating activities for them. Examples include cooking in Design and Technology, looking at the importance of a healthy diet, nutrition and plant growth in Science, learning about where foods come from in Geography and what the Romans/Tudors/Victorians ate in history. Activities are suggested for Maths, English, Art and ICT which provide opportunities for meaningful, 'real life' application of knowledge and skills. For example, children can design a poster or leaflet outlining the 5 a day message, collect, interpret and present data from surveys, and read and understand instructions and food labels. Activities in section three can either be done as part of a project on healthy eating (e.g. as the class works through section two) or they can be done separately and independently from Grab 5! as supplementary material that supports other curriculum work.

Throughout sections two and three there are accompanying worksheets which can be photocopied for the children. Both follow the format below.
