Grab
5! is a project about encouraging 7-11 year olds to eat more fruit
and vegetables. Eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables
per day reduces the risk of heart disease and some cancers. One
in five children, however, eat no fruit in a week. Eating habits
are formed in childhood; if eating habits can be changed early,
we have the opportunity to break unhealthy habits and form healthy
one for years to come.
The Grab 5! project is a whole school project. All aspects of school
life - curricular and extra-curricular activities, the social and
the physical environment - are addressed to ensure that messages
being given around healthy eating are consistent and mutually reinforced.
As well as this Grab 5! Curriculum Pack a Grab 5! Action Pack is
also available. The Action Pack provides ideas of practical things
schools can do to promote fruit and vegetables, such as setting
up fruit tuck shops, breakfast clubs, cooking activities, growing
schemes and farm visits. For copies of the Grab 5! Action Pack contact
the Grab 5! team at Sustain (see contact details on back page).
