It is important that, before project activities kick off in school,
the people who will be taking them on, i.e. the teachers and other
school staff, know what the Grab 5! project is about. If they are
convinced and supportive of the Grab 5! aims they are far more likely
to get involved and carry out activities enthusiastically. The most
obvious method of telling staff about what is going on is to give
details at staff meetings. A small presentation could be given by
the coordinator or the head. Alternatively, if schools in your area
are being supported by a Grab 5! / fruit and veg coordinator, why
not invite them in to talk to the staff? A community dietitian may
also be happy to come in and persuade everyone of the importance
of eating more fruit and veg. Having convinced people, outline what
the project will involve and some of the activities that could happen.
Listen to people's views and encourage involvement. It may be appropriate
to offer tasters of exotic fruits and vegetables at the meeting
or to prepare smoothies for refreshments.
It is also important to promote the project to parents either at
parents' meetings, through newsletters or both.
