They have been invited to talk about their work and how they see the world of food policy. The purpose of the sessions is for us to hear what the speakers say, to understand their motives, their view of the world of food, any lessons they have learned, etc. The talks are about 30 minutes, followed by up to 90 minutes of questions and answers. The series was created for current and past students and members of the Centre for Food Policy but now welcomes other guests from outside the University. Please let Tim Lang know: t.lang@city.ac.uk Date: Wednesday, July 4 2012 Speakers: MARION NESTLE (New York University) & MAL NESHEIM (Cornell University) Title: Why Calories Count: From Science to Politics Time: 1600-1800 Date: Weds July 4 2012 Venue: B104, City University, Northampton Square, EC1V 0HB Getting there: Angel/Farringdon/Barbican tube stations - http://www.city.ac.uk/visit When there: come to main Northampton Sq reception and ask; it is 30 seconds walk! About the session Profs Marion Nestle and Mal Nesheim will be talking about the thinking reflected in their recent book. Like others, they argue that there is a problem in the West – symbolised by the USA – in overproduction and over consumption of calories. They argue, however, that this is a result of failed politics, a notion that progress has been redefined as ubiquity of food, in ever bigger portions and offered everywhere. One cannot walk down a street without a food ‘offer’. For Nestle and Nesheim, the public needs to see the politics of the biological processes. A purely ‘food’ approach or ‘physical activity’ focus will not tackle the problem. Human bodies are in a mismatch with the circumstances we inhabit. To change this requires policy and political analysis not just an understanding of human biology and our response to food supply. They offer a hard analysis of why and how public policy has been and remains part of the problem for US food. Speaker bios Professor Marion Nestle is Paulette Goddard Professor, New York University, in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health (the department she chaired from 1988-2003) and Professor of Sociology at New York University, USA. Her degrees include a PhD in molecular biology and an MPH in public health nutrition, both from the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of many books, is frequently cited in the US press and media, and writes a celebrated blog: http://www.foodpolitics.com/ Prof Malden C Nesheim is Professor of Nutrition Emeritus and Provost Emeritus at Cornell University, USA. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1959. He was Director of the Division of Nutritional Sciences, 1974-1987, and became Provost of Cornell University in September 1989. He has a BSC in agricultural science and MSc in animal nutrition from the University of Illinois, and PhD in nutrition from Cornell. His research interests have been aspects of nutritional biochemistry and more recently, the relationship of parasitic infections to nutritional status. Profs Nestle and Nesheim are co-authors of Why Calories Count. Berkeley CA: University of California Press. About the session Prof Janet Poppendieck is celebrated for her writing about the interface of food and welfare. In this session, she wants to reflect on what can be done to get a grip on food welfare for young people. She will ask whether the discourse about school food is too narrow. Should those campaigning for better food be asking also for universal free school meals? She will give her analysis of what food welfare is and how to work for more socially progressive goals in hard economic times. Speaker bio Professor Janet Poppendieck taught Sociology at Hunter College, City University of New York, from 1976. She received her undergraduate degree in History from Duke University (‘67) and her Masters (‘72) and PhD (‘79) degrees from the Florence Heller Graduate School for Advanced Studies in Social Welfare at Brandeis University. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Association for the Study of Food and Society and the Advisory Committees of City-as-School and the Welfare Rights Initiative. She lives in Brooklyn. She is the author of Breadlines Knee Deep in Wheat: Food Assistance in the Great Depression (Rutgers: 1986), Sweet Charity? The protest is over events unfolding in Paraguay since the political coup and ousting of President Fernando Lugo, and to show solidarity for the communities and civil society demanding a return to democracy. Friends of the Earth is supporting the action in solidarity with our partner group in Paraguay, Sobrevivencia, and the communities we are working with to resist soy encroachment and build food sovereignty – one of whom, 20-year old Miguel Correa, has been wrongly arrested and imprisoned. **Please do come along if you can, and circulate widely to your contacts and lists** Our presence will show support for the communities and civil society groups in Paraguay from a broad range of UK organisations. On June 15th: police move in to evict landless campesinos from land dubiously acquired from the state by a former and long-time Colorado Party (right wing) senator, Blas Riquelme. Gunfight breaks out and at least 17 people are killed, including 6 police. Miguel Correa, a twenty year old participant in Friends of the Earth/Sobrevivencia’s community project in Paraguay is arrested by police for involvement in the killings, despite having been nowhere near the event at the time. He is still in prison one month later. June 22nd: Paraguayan liberal party swap sides and joint the Colorados to call for impeachment of president Lugo. He’s only given 24hours to prepare his defence. Lugo replaced by his vice president, the liberal Frederico Franco. Many nations refuse to recognise new president and question the constitutionality of the process. Subsequently: Key Lugo ministers removed from office, including Environment Minister Oscar Rivas, and Miguel Lovera, head of Plant and Seed service SENAVE (responsible, amongst other things, for issuing licences for GM crops). Lovera was replaced by Jaime Ayala, president of Pacific Agrosciences, an agrochemical company, who announced that SENAVE “will be taking a new direction”. This is almost immediately followed by the approved release of GM cotton Bollgard-BT, and announcement that 4 new GM maize varieties, and 1 new GM soy are about to be approved: http://www.abc.com.py/edicion-impresa/economia/transgenicos--en-la-recta-final-422004.html A wave of other permissions for extractive projects have been announced, eg. last week negotiations with RTZ on a new aluminium smelter ‘moved to a second phase’ a project which ex-Environment Minister Rivas had been resisting: http://www.ultimahora.com/notas/542132-El-Gobierno-negociará-con-Rio-Tinto-sobre-una-tarifa--de-USD-60-MW/h Location: Paraguayan Embassy, 3rd Floor, 344 Kensington High Street, London, W14 8NSContact: ks_hodgson@hotmail.com or rmedina33@hotmail.com Organisers: Frente para la Defensa de la Democracia (FDD) |
